My village has a website in English:
It has some interesting and fun facts.
Today I finally got out to see something of Japan. I took my bike and did a
short sightseeing tour of Cape Zampa. I can get to the water in two minutes
but that's because it's downhill. The hill height provides me some protection
from typhoons. It's not even a ten minute ride to the lighthouse. There is an
expansive park there with barbeque huts. You have to buy the food from them.
No outside food allowed (sound familiar Scott?) There's a kiddy-style
amusement park with a train ride. There's a winding windy walking path. It's
very wabishi, a Japanese concept that implies there is beauty in something
that's desolate and lonely. Look at the photos and you'll see what I mean.
The rock is decidedly volcanic and beaten up by the weather. Okinawa has an
unofficial spectator sport, Typhoon watching. We get some pretty fierce storms
here. Cat 5 conditions or a Super-Typhoon. Those have sustained winds over 155
mph (248 kph). Last one here was in 1994.
